 iPhone X Review

It has been months since the iPhone X is out but its hype is not yet dead. It has been a huge gamble from Apple by making the iPhone so expensive and praising such an act is not always good. So it would be difficult to give such a product a perfect score. It has been a risky move to remove the Home button and completely redesign the phone but it was badly needed after so many years of similar phone designs. Apple itself calls it the "Future of the Smartphones" and has been trying to produce such a phone for the past decade. While the iPhone X is about it's premium design it has been a very dangerous move to remove the well known Touch ID Fingerprint Sensor and the Home button from it. It seems risky for such a company to introduce such new methods as it was already losing ground by removing the headphone jack last year. But nonetheless the iPhone X is the change we have been demanding for years.

So… is the iPhone X worth having? Will it change the direction of an industry where many of the specs Apple has put in – fast charging, wireless charging, bezel-less displays and face recognition – are already on the market?

SCREEN/DESIGN/DISPLAY

Well, every thing has it's own pros and cons and just like this the iPhone X also lacks in some of the crucial areas. It would be pointless to discuss it's price as it is the most expensive flagship phone in the market. It costs around 1000$ - 1150$ in the US and that is a huge sum. It has a very sleek design and looks good. By far it has the best screen on an iPhone and has a full HD screen which means clear and vibrant colors. The aluminium sides have been swapped out for stainless steels and the front and rear of the device are glass which means that it is prone to fingerprints thus leaving greasy marks.

It has a bezel-less screen with an OLED display and a notch on top which slightly irks. OLEDs offer better contrast, true blacks and a more colorful picture, but they’re not always perfect. You will see the notch if you turn on the device and it is irritating when watching a video but in other instances like using certain apps it blends in with the trickery if the software. The 3D touch makes a return too so you can now carry out various functions by applying various pressure on the screen. Compared to the LCD screen of the iPhone 8 Plus, there are times when you can see less of the action, but compare them side by side and you’ll see that the overall richness, depth and quality for watching movies is just higher on the iPhone X.

HARDWARE/SOUND

The internals of the iPhone X are same as iPhone 8 and so the performance of iPhone X as compared to the iPhone 8 is relatively the same. However, with the addition of Augmented Reality Experiences, there is no such app that can push the phone to it's limits. Moreover, the AR experience on the older hardwares like iPhone 7 and iPhone 6 is also very good.

Even though the screen stretches from edge-to-edge there is enough room to put dual speakers ( Forward Facing and the Downward Firing Unit ). The audio quality is great and the bass is also finely tuned and so carries more detail. The audio is quite loud and the call quality is awesome. There have been certain circumstances where people have reported about a hissing noise but nonetheless i have not experienced such an issue. The reception for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is also very strong.

SOFTWARE

Due to the removal of the Home button there has been an introduction to various new gestures including the quick swipe for switching apps. To capture a screenshot you press the lock switch and volume down; a longer-press of this combo will turn off the phone completely. Your notifications will also only show when you’re looking at the phone, and timers will dim when it knows you’re looking at the phone. There are certain bugs in the software like when you try to access the camera and the torch at the lock screen, they won't disappear when numerous notifications come in.

CAMERA

The iPhone has dual 12-MP camera at the rear and has a wide aperture. This results in good quality photos in low light. Apple has completely rebuilt the sensor, making it larger and faster. There is also a new ISP ( Image Signal Processor ) for better textures and colors. The range between light and dark colors is amazing and the camera manages not to overexpose. There is a lot of depth and detail in the pictures and produces excellent images. The newly added "Contour Light" and "Stage Light" options are great and help to produce stunning images. The Portrait mode through the 7MP front facing camera is fine as sometimes it bugs and blurs the wrong part.

The Facial Recognition is impressive and performs it's function even if you are in a pitch black room. To unlock your device you simply look at it and it recognizes your face and gives you access to the phone. It can fail sometimes and eventually lock your device. There can also be a slight delay before the device is unlocked and you need to look directly at your phone. It can work even if you are wearing sunglasses as long as the infra-red sensor can penetrate through the lens. Whereas the Touch ID is faster than the Face Id, no reason can be seen why Apple decided to remove it. Contactless payments can be more inconvenient as you need to double tap the side button and if you mistakenly triple tap it then the phone will automatically shut down.

The Animoji feature makes use of the True-depth Camera and your own face. It is fun to play with and delights children. Whereas Animoji is novelty and you must not buy the iPhone only for that, it shows the power of the camera. You can easily control the Emojis by using your facial expressions. This feature could either be a game changer for the upcoming devices or it could be a complete fail and an expensive piece of fun hardware.

BATTERY

iPhone X supports wireless charging and in order to charge the device faster you need USB-C-to-lightning cable. It has an average battery performance and can charge upto 100% in almost 2 hours. The battery life is similar to the plus models and can run for about 12 hours with the maximum use of Wi-Fi.

CONCLUSION

The iPhone X is one of the best phones out in the market and is a genuine step forward because of it's premium design. There are many circumstances in which iPhone X is the correct choice and considering the topics that i have discussed above the iPhone X is worth buying only if it is in your budget. Others will make jokes on the phone's price but if you can afford it then you won't be disappointed.
